Pechakucha

Clare Addy, senior account manager at twentysix, gets everyone talking . . .

And so to PechaKucha; the global ‘quick sticks’ presentation phenomenon now sitting at the core of quarterly events held at The Media Centre, Huddersfield.

Oh what a night – certainly the best I’ve had the pleasure of hosting so far in this series of fast, fun evenings basking in the chilled yet sophisticated surroundings of The Media Centre’s social hub; Cafe Ollo.

For those of you unfamiliar with PK, my favoured definition of sorts is ‘get to the PowerPoint and sit the hell down!’

Participants take the fore equipped with only 20 slides.  At 20 seconds per slide procrastination is the enemy and concise clarity your ally!  However, fret not:  The relaxed atmosphere certainly encourages inventive and ambitious subject matter – amplified in January’s fascinating instalment!

With presentation content ranging from the nostalgia and challenges of Family Trees to the whys and wherefores of teledildonics (I know – the mind boggles!) You really can’t criticise the Huddersfield PK contingent of lacking diversity!

Mark Longbottom of Design 58 on grass collecting:

Nadio Granata of the University of Huddersfield on the plus points and pitfalls of business programmes on TV

Andy Green of Leagus on surprises nestled in family trees

Steve Manthorp on sex with robots

James Beale of Proper Job Theatre on their work over the years.

Tim Difford on Instagram and other iPhone photo apps.

A hearty salute also to our valiant, occasionally hilarious presenters.  One thing you can guarantee at PK is insight and humour.  With an open mic style Q&A prior to chilled out chats and drinks to round off proceedings, there’s a belly full of banter for the taking!

Why vegetate in front of the usual brain bubblegum, when you can engage and edify yourself at evenings of this ilk!  We are lucky to have such a rich creative culture surrounding us so why not harness and enjoy?

I would encourage anyone to get involved whether it’s to participate or just spectate and of course, aligning with PK’s ethos of merriment – indulge in a glass of red (or several!) and leave the car at home to keep the TV company!
