The digital world

The thing I find interesting about the digital world, is how something that isn’t technically ‘real’, or ‘alive’, can have such a huge impact on the stuff that is, the ‘real world’ itself.

If you think about it, pretty much everything in our modern environment has a link to something digital or internet based, and with over 2 billion users worldwide, the internet itself must be the most powerful influence on earth today. Take a piece of fruit for example. It’s obviously not related to the internet or digital world at all, right? But what happens when a story goes out on the news (which is also digital), talking about a new found contamination of all the worlds apples or something? An unlikely story, but the point still stands…That story could go viral, and soon enough a few hundred million people would know, and wouldn’t want to eat apples. That’s the connection.

Basically, the digital world is everywhere, not just the internet (although that is a massive part of it). The majority of new technology which comes out these days is digital, along with how it’s advertised and sold. Also, I bet there’s not a job in the western world that doesn’t incorporate digital technology or methods in some way or another.

So, that’s why I think working in the digital sector would be pretty cool. You could have an effect on how the ‘real world’ is run, because these days the two seem to have mixed quite well. As in, if it’s not digitally related, then it’s probably not modern or up to date.

Digital design is appealing, as in a way you’re designing the future. What you’re doing could unknowingly affect how people live their lives in years to come. It may sound stupid, but look at Facebook, created by geeky Harvard University student, Mark Zuckerberg in his bedroom a mere 7 years ago, for a bit of fun. Now it has over 750 million users worldwide, and he’s the youngest ever self-made billionaire.

I personally don’t know many people without a Facebook profile, and that’s because it was one digital internet idea that hit the big time, and became extremely popular, extremely quickly. But there is and there will be many more digital designs or ideas that reach success, and as I said, maybe have an effect on people’s lives…for good or for bad.

But asides from design, there’s many other areas of the digital world that seem interesting, for their own individual reasons.

Working at twentysix in Leeds, I’ve seen how a digital marketing business works. And in short, they research, plan and design how a company is sold. How does the public see it? What impressions does that company give off? What is their image? twentysix create all of this for their clients, and there’s a hell of a lot of work that goes in to it all! The interesting part is how the work they do, all the ideas and the execution of it put together, goes live to the whole world. And whatever is produced can be seen, interpreted and judged by more than 2 billion people. Possibly having an effect on every single one…
